Beginners –

You are attracted to woodworking but lack the basic knowledge and/or tools to get started. You may have carved something or made a few items from wood, but need better knowledge and tools to get to the next level of woodworking to make other objects in wood.

Objectives:

  • Discuss basic woodworking hand tools, their uses, tuning and sharpening
  • Operation of basic woodworking machinery including safety protocols
  • Review of domestic hardwoods and their properties and best uses
  • Simple joinery and how to apply to furnishings and create it
  • Intro to design and basic layout
  • Assembly clamping and adhesive processes

Intermediate –

You have been working with wood for a few years and have some hand tools and machinery. You may have even had some formal but limited training, and you know how to cut basic joinery. You have made some functional items like small tables, boxes, or other decorative items in wood. You would like to make larger tables, stools, maybe even simple chairs but recognize that you need more knowledge of tools, equipment, and processes and design to take that next step.

Objectives:

  • An intro to wood technology and basic design with wood, the material
  • An overview of larger and more capable machinery and shop layout
  • Uses and maintenance of equipment, including making jigs and fixtures
  • Handsaws, hand planes, chisels, and layout and measuring tools and sharpening
  • Substructures, drawers, and carcasses. Woodworking meets cabinet-making
  • Intermediate design-to-build. The integration of art and make-ability

Advanced –

You are a solid technician with good dexterity and a fairly broad knowledge of wood as a material. You have made a few larger, more complex pieces like dining tables or a buffet. You have learned what you can with the tools and equipment you have and would like some time in a professional shop with guidance to gain a better of understanding of where you could take the craft of wood. You may be limited by your understanding of design, proportion, texture, and color. You would like to explore the integration of multiple wood species and other materials like metals, stone, glass and epoxy fillers. You may even want to explore upholstery as another element of your design/build skill set. You would like to have deeper understanding of exotic wood and where its best uses are. You may have sold some of your work and would like to explore woodworking as a full-time profession, and recognize that you need to improve your proficiency to make a living at it. Design drives cost.

Objectives:

  • Advanced furniture design and layout including 2D, 3D and Computer Aided Design overview
  • Improvement of accuracy including precision layout, jigs, and joinery techniques
  • Assembly of complex objects including clamping and vacuum forces and assembly jigs and sequencing
  • Expanded understanding of woodworking equipment and what makes it good or not
  • Basic veneering and Inlaying of various materials and use of adhesives in all applications
  • Processes related to upholstery, supports, and substructures
  • Lumber selection, acquisition, storage, and drying
  • Designing for affordability. to cost and efficient but simple structures
